Big Data in Crime Prevention
Predictive Policing
Predictive policing has recently been introduced in the UK; the aim is to reduce gang violence within London. The Metropolitan Police Service's Gang Violence Matrix uses algorithms and measures them on a scoring system based on evidence of them committing crimes and weapon offences. Rated either red, amber, or green, allows the police to identify the most violent or at-risk gang members. This predictive policing is linked across London and has helped save lives and reduce gang violence.https://www.fightingknifecrime.london/report/review-of-the-metropolitan-police-service-gangs-violence-matrix-a-one-year-update
Monitoring Social Media
With the increased use of social media use over the last couple of years, Governments are using big data to monitor these platforms for any potential threats, by monitoring conversations and tracking content such as hate speech and radical ideals. All of this can be detected and acted upon, through digital surveillance. Potentially saving lives and disrupting potential crimes that are in their early stages.
